10 of 50 Babysteps- Maple Syrup

The tradition in our house is eating daddy’s famous frying pan size pancakes on Saturday morning! They are delicious! But I am so ashamed to say…that we used to top them in what we thought was “Syrup”… and while I guess if you want to get technical…it really was syrup, by definition, but not from the maple tree…but instead HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP… aka highly concentrated, not naturally occurring,  SYRUP from CORN (and genetically modified also!).

Our wake up call came about 2 years ago when I began reading lables….not for fat grams and carb counts but instead for INGREDIENTS! See for yourself below and then walk, NO RUN, to your pantry and read the LABEL of your Syrup.  For a refresher on how bad the fake syrup is you can visit this post and watch the video.

Many will argue that no syrup is good for you and that sugar in any form is not good, too. And I would counter with “Anything in excess is harmful for all of us” but our brains do run on glucose and so naturally occurring sugar should be part of one’s diet, in moderation. In our house we go by the “little dab will do you” mentality!

Enjoy! And go BUY the REAL stuff! I just love the AFTER label: it says INGREDIENT… not plural… now that is a challenge, to buy food in a store that ONLY HAS ONE INGREDIENT! Happy Searching!
