The tradition in our house is eating daddy’s famous frying pan size pancakes on Saturday morning! They are delicious! But I am so ashamed to say…that we used to top them in what we thought was “Syrup”… and while I guess if you want to get technical…it really was syrup, by definition, but not from the maple tree…but instead HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP… aka highly concentrated, not naturally occurring, SYRUP from CORN (and genetically modified also!).
Our wake up call came about 2 years ago when I began reading lables….not for fat grams and carb counts but instead for INGREDIENTS! Many will argue that no syrup is good for you and that sugar in any form is not good, too. And I would counter with “Anything in excess is harmful for all of us” but our brains do run on glucose and so naturally occurring sugar should be part of one’s diet, in moderation. In our house we go by the “little dab will do you” mentality!
