1 of 50 BabySteps- Ketchup

Here we are at step #1 ! I remember the day we decided to start trying to get the High Fructose Corn Syrup out of our house… and the first thing I picked up in the fridge had it in it…as the 3rd ingredient! Thankfully for this Pittsburgh loving family…Heinz had a HFCS free brand (called Simply Heinz) and even better an Organic version! Hunt’s and Annie’s also have HFCS free options! Or for those who are so inclined… here is a make your own recipe! What does your Ketchup label say??

** Please note: Ketchup is HIGH IN SALICYLATES (read this family’s story of Ketchup and night terrors here under the Sleep! heading). Lady A has never had Ketchup and the rest of our family uses it limitedly (1-3x per week). For her we are trying a modified version of “Pear Ketchup” that we found in Sue Dengate’s book Fed Up.

I buy the Hunts No Corn Syrup brand- it’s 94 cents at HEB, cheaper than the store brand! The good thing about tackling HFCS is that when you eliminate that, you often eliminate a lot of other things as well (such as food dyes- so often dyes and HFCS go hand in hand!)

Eliminating corn syrup is a bear! But, if you are eliminating boxed.preserved foods all of a sudden it gets easier! If it doesn’t need to be refrigerated, if it wasn’t bought at Trader Joe’s or a few online resources, odds are the expiration date will be about 2 years from now! The longer it can sit on the shelf, the higher the odds it is full of stuff we should not eat.

Great post! I love the concept of one food at a time! thanks Kristi!

  4. Wow! Aiden’s story that you linked to sounds so much like my 3 year old! The other day I started crying driving down the freeway wondering what is happening to my sweet child, as he screamed hysterically for the entire 10 mile drive to church because he saw me eating my last egg from breakfast (he had already eaten his at home, I of course had to eat my breakfast running out the door because I was so busy trying to get the kids fed dressed and out the door). He’s always been a terrible sleeper. He’s begun doing the screaming tantrums at night now, the other night he woke up at midnight and screamed hysterically for over an hour. Lately he’s become overly fearful of everything. Goes into terror screams if I run up the stairs ahead of him. And since going gluten free, both my 3 year old and 5 year old have begun wetting the bed several times a week. Weird. And frustrating.
We cut out HFCS (and all corn) on our elimination diet, but what do you do when you’re at a restaurant? Chick Fil A is one of my easy “safe” restaurants. But we’ve found out that ALL their sauces, ketchup included include HFCS. Even trying to find a ham for Christmas was difficult because all except Boar’s Head brand had HFCS. I’m with the others, eliminating HFCS is a pretty fast way to switch to whole food (unprocessed meat, fruits, veggies and rice) because just about anything that didn’t come from the ground or the farm has Corn syrup in it.. 🙂
